The Alhambra Apartments
801 8th Street
Placed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 12, 2001
The Alhambra Apartments, built in 1929, is designed in an eclectic, mixed architectural style with Moorish influences reminiscent of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. This six-story, U-shaped structure, which includes an underground garage, cost $250,000 to build. Constructed of reinforced concrete, the exterior is dressed with tan brick and an exquisite mix of terra cotta trimmings that include crosses, shields, flower baskets, and winged Sphinx-like women. The 48 apartments feature wood parquet floors and arched entryways. The Alhambra is a significant example of a large-scale commercial property built in Sioux City just prior to the 1929 stock market crash.
